ChatGPT and Codex will share one token-based usage limit from December on Plus, Pro and Business plans

OpenAI's help centre says that from December 2026, chatting in ChatGPT and coding in Codex will draw from one allowance measured in tokens. Only Instant chats are free of it. The start date and the size of each plan's allowance have not been published.

OpenAI has updated its help centre with an article titled "Understanding ChatGPT and Codex usage limits" (dated 31 October 2026). It says that from December, the Plus, Pro and Business plans will have a single usage allowance shared by ChatGPT and Codex, measured in tokens. ITmedia reports that OpenAI announced on 1 November (US time) that it will also bring the agent features of ChatGPT Work into ChatGPT itself. Work is built on Codex.

What changes: Codex, ChatGPT Work and some agent features already share one pool. OpenAI's Codex pricing page says "ChatGPT Work and Codex share usage". From December, everyday ChatGPT chat joins that pool. The only exception is chat with Instant, which does not use the allowance. Larger models and harder tasks use up more of it. Conversation and coding now compete for the same budget, so a long reasoning chat leaves less for Codex, and vice versa.

At the limit, remaining usage and reset times will appear under Settings → Usage. You can wait for the reset, change your plan or buy credits. OpenAI says it expects that, for most users, waiting for resets will not happen more often than it does today. That is an expectation, not a guarantee.

Not yet published: the exact December date, the number of tokens each plan includes, and how the current five-hour and weekly windows will apply to the shared pool. Today Pro has no five-hour limit, though weekly limits may apply. Free, Go, Enterprise and Edu are not named in the change. No date has been given for merging Chat and Work either.
